36 Self-Refection Questions to Consider Before College: Digital and Printable Cards for Teens

With college on the horizon, anxiety can be at an all-time high for teens and parents. As a college counselor, I know it can be easy to put the cart before the horse: to focus on the outcome of admission to a “good” college, rather than making sure your teen develops the skills, mindset, and reflection necessary to identify and create their own version of success.

Help your teens get to know themselves in a meaningful way with 36 self-reflection questions to consider before college. These digital and printable self-refection cards are a perfectly simple way to help your teen dig deep and ask important questions that will promote mindfulness, gratitude, perspective, and resilience.

Like most parents of teens, I’m guessing you are looking for ways to help your child on their journey to becoming a happy and thriving adult. You know that a great college experience will set them up for a successful life, but sometimes you might clash on that vision with your child, or you might be ready to “talk college” before they are.

These self-reflection cards show your teen you care about more than their SAT score and what they got on that Pre-Calc test: you care about who they are and who they want to become in this world.

New to my little corner of the internet spreading self-reflection, growth mindset and joyful college processes for teens and their parents?

I’m Sara Purviance, founder of Mindset College Collective. As a school-based college counselor and mom, I’m always looking for ways to simplify processes, help students get to know their real selves, and find educational next steps where they will challenge themselves and thrive. I want to help parents give themselves some grace and support their teens without taking away the ownership and self-efficacy students need for a successful launch.

I created 36 Self-Reflection Questions to Consider Before College, because after 16 years of working with high school students in the college admission process, I realized that it typically wasn’t preparation students were lacking as they applied to and launched to college, but it was the deep self-reflection that can only happen when you step off the treadmill of achievement periodically and ask yourself tough questions.

These are the questions I will ask my children. All teens deserve the space to get to know their authentic selves and think critically about what they truly want, and how they want to show up in the world.
